Climbing seasons in Nepal
Why most Nepal expeditions run in spring and autumn, and what the monsoon and winter do to the mountains.
This is not a substitute for training, a qualified guide or medical advice. Climbing at altitude can kill. Learn from qualified instructors and climb with licensed Nepali guides.
The two main windows
Climbing in the Nepal Himalaya is mostly limited to the periods just before and just after the monsoon. Before it is April and May, the pre-monsoon or spring season. After it is October and November, the post-monsoon or autumn season.1
The Himalayan Database, which records expeditions in Nepal, can be searched by season and publishes season lists, including an Autumn-Winter 2025 update. That reflects how expeditions are planned around the calendar.4
Spring: pre-monsoon
Winter ends in March, temperatures rise in April and high-altitude winds generally ease. A weather article from Weatherzone says April and May are the best months for summit attempts. Even then, jet-stream winds can still make conditions dangerous.3
Climbers on Everest usually look for a window of roughly 7 to 10 days in spring or autumn, when the monsoon is starting or ending, to avoid the worst winds.2
The monsoon
The southwest monsoon brings heavy rain to the Himalaya from about June to September. It can disrupt transport and trigger landslides.1
Weatherzone notes that the monsoon usually reaches the eastern Himalaya in early June. Climbers aim to finish and get down before it brings heavy snow, thunderstorms and avalanche risk higher up.3
Autumn and winter
Autumn follows the monsoon, in October and November, and is the second main season for expeditions. Trekking support follows the same rhythm: the Himalayan Rescue Association's Pheriche aid post is staffed twice a year, during the trekking seasons.15
Winter is much harsher. Weatherzone reports that above 7,000 m winter temperatures run from about -20 to -30 degrees Celsius, with strong jet-stream winds. Winter climbs happen, and a Polish team made a winter ascent of Everest in 1980, but they are rare and demanding.32
